After finishing his university studies, the young Takayanagi finds himself at a crossroads in life: he has talent but lacks connections and family support to carve out a future in Tokyo. Sunk in gloom and pessimism, he scrapes by doing translations while dreaming of writing his great novel, which never comes to fruition. His life takes a turn when he meets Doya Shirai, a former provincial teacher dismissed for his progressive ideas, now transformed into a marginal intellectual. Although Shirai is unaware, a bond from the past links the two, deeply weighing on Takayanagi's conscience.
